Cospeito - Lugo | PalaceMore than five centuries of history endure within the walls of this exceptional complex in Cospeito. Linked since the 15th century to important lineages of Galician nobility, this pazo offers completely restored spaces with pool, tennis court, agricultural facilities and more than 42 hectares (103.78 acres) of land. A unique historical legacy just 18 minutes from Lugo.
This property is located in the municipality of Cospeito, in the heart of the Terra Chá region, just 11 km from Vilalba and Rábade and 18 minutes from the city of Lugo. Nestled in an intimate, private and slightly elevated corner, the property is surrounded by forests and extensive meadows that serve as a natural carpet.
From the road, a straight path flanked by trees leads to the main complex, completely restored and consisting of a pazo with chapel, outdoor pool, sports court, barbecue area and a garage with viewpoint offering privileged views of the surroundings. An independent guest house, agricultural facilities and more than 42 hectares (103.78 acres) of meadows and forests complete this ensemble of uncommon size and historical value.
The property holds an exceptional noble past. The earliest documented references to the pazo date back to the 15th century, when it belonged to the Saavedra family, one of the most powerful hidalgo houses in Galicia. For centuries, the pazo passed from generation to generation among important lineages linked to the Montenegro family, as attested by the heraldic stone shields preserved at various points of the building.
The estate stands in the vicinity of the Torre de Caldaloba, a medieval fortress declared a Site of Cultural Interest, which was the last stronghold of resistance of the Galician nobility against the Irmandiño revolt and the centralising policies of the Catholic Monarchs.
The pazo is an L-shaped stone construction with two storeys and a hipped roof, fully restored while preserving its original character and essence. Its ivy-covered façades give it a distinctive and characterful appearance that changes with the passing seasons.
The pazo was presumably built in two phases, forming an angle between the two sections. The shorter section stands out, housing the chapel and a covered balcony with granite balustrade, resting on two arches that form a portico. The longer section contains the main entrance to the residence.
The ground floor of the pazo comprises an entrance hall, kitchen, laundry room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms and access to the chapel, while the upper floor is arranged as a hallway, sitting room, dining room, balcony, three bedrooms and three bathrooms.
Each room is unique and conveys the history of the place, featuring carefully curated period furniture that harmonises with the building and its distinguished character. The spaces preserve original elements that bear witness to the history of the property, with stone masonry walls, ashlar stonework and exposed timber beam ceilings. Doors and windows are solid chestnut and cedar wood with double Climalit glazing.
The chapel, integrated into the main structure of the pazo, dates from 1766 and is an example of baroque style with an exceptional carved wooden altarpiece. It features a nave and presbytery on the ground floor, and a choir on the upper floor accessible from inside the pazo.
The pazo is surrounded by a walled enclosure with well-tended gardens and multiple leisure spaces, among which the outdoor pool stands out, generously sized and equipped with a sunbathing area. Opposite it, an auxiliary building serves as changing rooms and garage, with a viewing terrace on the upper level offering excellent views of the landscape.
On the other side stands the barbecue area, a semi-open structure decorated with traditional farming tools and implements. The enclosure is completed by a sports court located at the rear of the estate.
A short distance from the main enclosure stands the guest house, a single-storey detached residence comprising an entrance hall, kitchen-living room, bathroom, three bedrooms and a pantry. Although not recently renovated, it is in good condition.
The property includes a set of agricultural facilities comprising three adjoining open-plan barns, a module for machinery storage with office and toilet, and a third residence attached to the buildings. Also included are a grain silo, a slurry tank and two storage buildings.
The 42 hectares (103.78 ac) of land surrounding the pazo comprise various parcels of woodland and meadow.
Cospeito is a municipality that concentrates some of the most singular attractions of Terra Chá. At the heart of the territory lies the Lagoa de Cospeito, one of the most valuable wetlands in Galicia, listed within the Natura 2000 network and the Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve.
The historic heritage of the area is equally remarkable. In addition to the estate's own setting, with the Torre de Caldaloba rising above the remains of the castro of O Coto do Mato, the municipality preserves other architectural landmarks of the Galician nobility such as the Pazo de Sistallo, whose 18th-century design is attributed to the same architect who worked on the Obradoiro façade of the Cathedral of Santiago.
The Castro de Viladonga, in the nearby municipality of Castro de Rei, is one of the best-excavated Iron Age hillforts in Galicia, with an important museum dedicated to its interpretation. In addition, the beaches of the Lugo coast can be reached in under an hour, including the iconic Playa de las Catedrales, considered one of the finest beaches in the world.
Despite being surrounded by nature, the property is well connected to various towns. A Feira do Monte, the municipal capital, is just 8 km away, while Rábade and Vilalba are reachable in just over 10 minutes. The city of Lugo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Roman walls, is just 18 minutes away, offering access to a full range of services, shops, culture and gastronomy.
This historic pazo for sale represents a unique opportunity to acquire a first-rate legacy in a privileged natural setting, with restored facilities and a noble past that can be felt in every corner.
