Ourense is the only province in Galicia without a coastline, and that particularity has shaped a territory with its own identity and an extraordinary inner richness. Beautiful river valleys, mountain ranges, a world-renowned wine culture and a network of thermal waters unrivalled in Europe make up a province that surprises all who discover it. At the heart of it all, the city of Ourense: known as the thermal capital of Galicia and considered the second European city with the most thermal springs after Budapest.
To the north of the province, the Miño and Sil rivers form the spectacular canyons of the Ribeira Sacra, with walls of up to 500 metres and terraced vineyards that defy gravity. Declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2021, the Ribeira Sacra also harbours an exceptional concentration of monasteries and Romanesque art, many of them hidden among hard-to-reach forests. Its wines, made primarily from mencía grapes using one of the most demanding viticultural methods in the world, enjoy growing international recognition.
To the south and east, the province offers high mountain landscapes in spaces such as the Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés Natural Park, a forested territory where the border between Galicia and Portugal fades among trails and small villages. The Serra de San Mamede and the regions of Valdeorras and A Limia complete a map of great landscape diversity. Historic towns such as Allariz — considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain — or Ribadavia, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Galicia, add a heritage dimension that few Spanish provinces can offer.
The name Ourense comes from the Latin aquae urentes, burning waters, and the province has been making use of this exceptional natural resource for centuries. In the capital itself, water emerges at temperatures of up to 70°C. In Lobios, thermal water rises directly from the bed of the Caldo river, allowing open-air bathing in the heart of the mountains. In Ribadavia, the Prexigueiro thermal baths offer a Japanese-inspired circuit surrounded by forests; and in numerous municipalities across the province, natural springs have given rise to a thermal network unique on the Iberian Peninsula.
