Why choose Asturias?

The Principality of Asturias is known as the Natural Paradise of Spain: with seven Biosphere Reserves and the best-preserved coastline in the entire country, it is one of the regions of Europe where nature has been conserved with the greatest integrity. Add to this an extraordinary heritage — with three UNESCO recognitions covering pre-Romanesque art, prehistoric caves and the Camino de Santiago routes — and a gastronomy deeply rooted in the land. At its heart, the city of Oviedo offers all the services of a modern, well-connected capital, with an international airport just minutes away.

The Picos de Europa and the Asturian mountains

The Picos de Europa National Park, the first declared in Spain, is Asturias' natural emblem: limestone peaks rising above 2,600 metres, deep gorges, glacial lakes and mountain villages where time seems to stand still. But the Asturian mountains go much further: the Somiedo Natural Park — a Biosphere Reserve and home to the brown bear — with its brañas and teitos; the Muniellos forest, one of the best-preserved oak woodlands in Europe; and the ranges of western Asturias together make up a mountain territory of unrivalled natural richness on the Iberian Peninsula.

The Cantabrian coast: beaches, cliffs and fishing villages

Asturias has over 300 kilometres of coastline and more than 200 beaches, many of them virtually untouched. Charming fishing villages such as Cudillero and Llastres, and historic towns like Llanes and Ribadesella make up a coastline with a character all its own. The Camino del Norte and the Camino Primitivo cross the region from east to west, connecting coast and mountains through some of the most spectacular scenery on the entire Jacobean route.

Gastronomy, cider and a unique cultural identity

Asturian culture has a deep and distinctive identity, visible in its architecture — with hórreos and paneras as its most recognisable elements — in its traditions and in a gastronomy that has become a hallmark of the territory. Asturian natural cider — declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO —, cheeses in over 50 artisan varieties, fabada, meats and Cantabrian seafood complete a culinary scene of the highest order.
