In the heart of the Ulla Valley, bordering the path of the Camino de Santiago, lies this fantastic fully restored 16th century house. The property includes a large main house with 5 bedrooms, an annex house, a traditional hórreo (Galician granary) and beautiful outdoor spaces spread over almost 2000 m². Its unique architectural elements, such as the 12th century Romanesque capital and two mythological statues over 200 years old, give it great historical value.
This property is located in the municipality of Vedra, in the heart of the Ulla Valley, an area formerly known as the "Garden of Santiago" due to its privileged microclimate and the abundance of its harvests. Its location is exceptional, just 15 minutes from Santiago de Compostela with its international airport, and one hour from the main Galician cities: Pontevedra, A Coruña, Lugo and Ourense, all with excellent highway connections. Particularly relevant is its location next to the Camino de Santiago (Vía de la Plata), whose route passes right in front of the property.
The main house, dating from the late 16th century, was built mostly with stones and construction elements from the Monastery of San Xoan da Cova, which existed until 1571, when a strong flood of the Ulla River destroyed it. The southern corner of the house is adorned with a valuable 12th century Romanesque capital, from the same monastery, depicting one of the Miracles of Saint Nicholas. Two stone-carved mythological creatures, a lion and a dragon, with at least 200 years of age, preside over the main entrance.
In 1986, a complete renovation of the entire complex was undertaken, preserving all significant architectural elements and the original structure. The ground floor houses an impressive cellar with two ancient wine presses and a small press, all carved in stone, evidencing the property's ancient wine-making power. There is also a space currently used as an office which, according to tradition, was a prison during the times of the Spanish Inquisition.
The upper floor includes a spacious and bright living-dining room with an imposing stone fireplace and wood-burning oven, which connects to a gallery that provides access to the house's balcony. The kitchen, equipped with the traditional wood-burning stove and modern appliances, has direct access to the inner courtyard. The same floor features 5 spacious bedrooms and 2 complete bathrooms.
Adjacent to the main house is the former caretakers' house, a building of 100 m² per floor distributed over two heights, whose wooden roof was completely restored in 2005. The property is completed with a typical Galician hórreo with four bays made of oak wood (remodeled in 1990), a small barn for farming tools, patio areas with a stone fountain, and a beautiful garden with trees and ornamental plants.
This property represents a unique opportunity to inhabit a piece of Galician history, in a natural environment with excellent communications, and right on the Vía de la Plata of the Camino de Santiago.
